Information For Students Before Arriving to the U.K.
Pre-Arrival
What Should I Pack?
Manchester has a mild climate. Summer temperatures range from between 20°C-24°C, but may sometimes reach 30°C. Winter temperates range from 0°C-8°C, but can sometimes drop below 0°C. It is a good idea to bring warm clothes to wear in Winter, including hats, scarves, and gloves. If you forget to bring warm clothes to wear, then there are plenty of clothes shops in the city centre that sell affordable, warm clothes.
Complete a Placement Test
To make your enrolment as swift as possible, we advise that you complete an online placement test before arriving in the U.K. This can be completed online by clicking this link. The online placement test will assess your grammar and vocabulary. You will be asked to complete a second placement test, upon your arrival, to assess your speaking and listening skills. If you do not complete the online placement test before you arrive in the U.K., then you will be required to complete it when you arrive at Kings Hall College.
Personal Safety and the Care of Valuables
Like most large cities in the U.K., and around the world, Manchester is home to many people. In places where there are lots of people, it is important to be careful and safe. Always keep an eye on your personal belongings and do not showcase any valuables in public. It is important to be safe when walking around Manchester, especially at night and if you are by yourself.

Compliance with the Law
Visitors to the U.K. must follow British law when residing in the U.K. It is important to note that laws in the U.K. may be different from your home country. Notable laws in the U.K. include:
- It is illegal to purchase alcohol if you are under the age of 18.
- It is illegal to drive in the U.K. without an issued driver’s licence.
Pay Any Remaining Course and Accommodation Fees
Before you can begin your course at Kings Hall College, you must pay all remaining course (and accommodation) fees to the college. If you are unable to pay online, then you can pay in person at the college on your first day.
Arrival
When Should I Arrive in Manchester?
You should arrive in Manchester the weekend before your course is set to begin. We advise that you arrive in Manchester in the morning or the afternoon, as transport links to and from Manchester Airport are more frequent at these times of the day. However, taxi services are available throughout the day and the night. If you are residing with a homestay host, then you must arrive at your host’s house on a Sunday (the day before your course begins). It is important to arrive at your host’s house in the morning, afternoon, or early evening.
How Do I Get to Kings Hall College from Manchester Airport?
Kings Hall College is located next to Piccadilly Gardens, which is accessible via train, tram, or bus. Check how long it will take you to get to the college from your accommodation so you arrive by 9 AM. The city centre is connected to Manchester Airport via the following links:

What Do I Need to Bring on My First Day?
It is important to be well-equipped for your studies. You must bring a notebook and a pen to your class every day. To complete your enrolment, you must also bring your passport, which will be scanned on arrival. You will not be able to enter your class if you forget to bring either of these documents on your first day.
When Will I Receive My Timetable?
You will receive your timetable on your first day. This will be given to you at the end of your induction.

Manchester has many shopping centres in and around the city centre. The closest of these shopping centres is The Arndale, which is located a 5-minute walk from our college.

SIM Cards
We recommend purchasing a British SIM card for your studies. SIM cards are available from reception. You can also choose to visit a phone shop to buy a sim card.
Driving in the U.K.
In the U.K., drivers drive on the left side of the road. Driving regulations in the U.K. are stricter than in other countries. If you choose to drive in the U.K., please ensure that you are safe, responsible, and legally able to drive.

Getting Arrested in the U.K.
If you are arrested, then you will usually be taken to a police station by the police and held in custody (held in a cell). You will then be questioned.
